Yup, you're Magick alright. You open your lips, and what emerges is the holiest of the Divine essence to ever drip forth unto this unholy, unworthy, unappreciative plane of existence.

And you make shit happen when you speak too.

You're Magick when you wake up in the morning before you even brush your teeth. So when they tell you that you need 95,000 things in your home to actually perform a decent ritual, it's not entirely true.

Your thoughts are ritual. Your tears are ritual. Your screams, curses, and groans. Your laughter is ritual. In truth, all you need is you.

But that's idealism, and this is not an ideal world. Quite the opposite. Keep it real, when you crawl into bed after just getting laid off, you don't feel your magical best. Not when your children are screaming bloody murder and you're plotting your escape. Not when your husband pisses you off for the 19th time this hour. Not when you've overdrawn your account and not when you forgot to do laundry and none of your bras are fresh.

Culturally, we've associated magicians and witches with tools - brooms, cauldrons, wands, potions, etc - even specific types of dress are indications that one is capable of performing great magic.

This conversation about your arsenal is not a gathering of things that will make you magical - you're already magical - but it is the armor that can shield you from negativity, block your own inner doubt, boost your confidence and elevate your magical intensity from average to supreme.

Some of these tools are meant to assist you with getting into the right mental space for seeding, manifesting, directing, channeling, or clearing energy. Others help you keep the space around you focused and high vibrational. The best tools help to awaken something particular in your Ancestral DNA that enhances the potency of your ritual, and even placebo items can make you FEEL like you're doing something - and with magic, feeling goes a long way.

Journal, coffee, laptop, and glasses

Journal - this isn't so much of a magical tool as it is a personal asset. Keep a journal to record spells & rituals and chart their success or outcome. You can refer back to make tweaks, use a successful spell again, or remind yourself that you are exactly as dope as you are. It is our precise and focused approach to ritual that activates the science in our spirituality.

Scrying pendulum

Pendulum - both a personal asset and a magical tool. Use a pendulum to provide basic guidance and insight when you're unsure and need clarity. Pendulums are good for answering questions with yes, no, and maybe responses. The greater confidence you gain, the less you'll need to rely on a pendulum and you'll be able to better trust your own inner voice for guidance. For deeper insight on topics with heavy emotional resonance, seek the guidance of a trusted spiritual reader to ensure the objectivity of the message.

Bundle of dried sage burning on altar

Sage - Essential especially if you have frequent guests in your home and/or interact with the outside world. If you leave your house, you need sage in the home. You need to be prepared for when you interact with the vampires, the energy drainers, the insecure, the neurotic, the know-it-alls, the racists, the feverish, the people who don’t know how to keep their issues from bumping into you and rubbing all up in your aura. You need to be prepared to get back to feeling like yourself.

Spiritual Baths - So on top of having sage, you should also keep Epson salt and baking soda in your home in case you need to take an impromptu spiritual bath. An unscheduled bath once a week can take you from zero to hero. We have to remember to spend enough time keeping our energy levels on point so that when we enter into ritual space, we are not burdened with the energy, spirits, and negativity of others.

Tingsha Bells

Bell, sistrum, and/or drum - Call forth your righteous and honorable Ancestral spirits with sound. Any one of these instruments can disrupt stagnant energy, again making sure that your ritual space is ready for work, and during ritual, sound can enhance the potency of your work. Recall that emotion intensifies the effect of spellwork; set your affirmations and prayers to rhythm and let the vibrations carry over the entire length of the Universe. Attuning to frequency is especially useful for spells to attract (people, money, opportunities, etc.) and sound waves assist with identifying resonance.

Essential oils

Essential oils - Every spiritual home should have a few; I recommend lavender, peppermint, lemon, clove, oregano, rosemary, and tea tree to start. Lavender quells the emotions and keeps them at bay; peppermint awakens the senses and arouses you energetically; rosemary activates your thoughts and allows divine words to roll of the tongue with ease. Lemon, clove, oregano, and tea tree are all good tools for health and wellness - for easing pain, cleaning wounds, soothing burns, and covering bruises with care. Essential oils can also be used for healing spiritual or emotional wounds as well, and can be applied to meridians and pressure points to release grief, fear, anger, etc.

Crystals - There are hundreds, maybe thousands, and wading through the different types can be daunting for a newbie. Sometimes even I get overwhelmed when I walk into a crystal shop by the myriad of options available to me. So if you don’t know where to start, begin with the stones that will activate, align, and charge your chakras: garnet, carnelian, citrine, rose quartz, turquoise, lapis lazuli, and amethyst. Above these seven, having a good clear quartz crystal, which can be used to magnify the effects of any other crystal, and selenite, which can be used to remove energy from other crystals, would be ideal. After completing your work with a particular crystal, no need to get another; simple cleanse the crystal thoroughly and erase all remnants of the previous intention. Then you can use it again for a new ritual when the time comes.

Incense - Sticks, cones, resin, all are beneficial and none are preferred by me over the other. Sticks are easier to work with if you are planning to hold the incense while it is burning, while resin tends to create a thicker smoke and cones burn quickly to great effect. For fragrance, go for a high quality frankincense, if you'd like one scent that has many applications. I'm fond of Nag Champa as well, and the resin-on-a-stick brand Fred Soll, but my current favorites are the many fragrances of Prahbuji’s Gifts.

Bonus: Magical Hours app - called Planetary Hours Pro and available via Google Play (Unfortunately, it's not in the Apple Store). This app gives you insight into which planetary energy is governing a particular time of day. This can help us to masterfully time our rituals: scheduling our love spells for the Venus hour; doing our protection spells during the Saturn hour; using our magic for courage and strength during the Mars hour. Will your spells work without aligning them in this way? Yes. Does it hurt to be in tune with the cosmos? Absolutely not. Doing spells in the time and energy that is supported by the universe can only assist with the success of our magick, not dampen it in any way.

Hopefully, this list of tools can aid you in preparing your home, and your spiritual work, for long-term ritual success. Remember that everything you think, speak, and do is a ritual in its own way, so we have a responsibility to be mindful of our actions at all times. Let’s create only what we intend to create, and fuel only what we intend to fuel. We goddesses are magick through and through. May none ever doubt this, especially not ourselves.
