ᗷᖇOᗯᑎ GIᖇᒪ....

With the brown eyes

What secrets lie between those eyes

Did your mother teach you how to switch your hips when you walk

Did she teach you how to look within and find your soft spot

Or has your daddy made you hard

Have society taught you that your beauty is refundable

Considering how many European women are cashing in on your features

Brown girl

What does your poetry hide

What does the words that form sentences contained with unspoken language tell

Who told you that you are your ancestors blood, sweat, and tears

That you are the replica of the Dandridge, Tubman, and Angelou characters

Brown girl

Who taught you to cover up your flaws

That beautiful stretch marks, cellulite, and scars were ugly

Brown girl

Who taught you to grow carnations from your mind Instead of dandelions

That the real will always replace those that are faking

Who taught you brown girl

Was it you

Was it your ex boyfriend

Was it television

Was it rap music

Or maybe India Arie

Who told you how to love you freely
